“Hi, my name is Dr. Mitchell Wachtel. We’re here today to talk about a common problem known as Achilles tendinitis. Achilles tendinitis is when there’s pain or inflammation along the Achilles tendon. The Achilles tendon attaches to the heel bone and goes upwards to the back of the leg.

Its main function is to “plantar flex” the foot. Unfortunately due to walking and many different injuries, we know that this tendon can get inflamed. Most people will sometimes feel a snap or they will have chronic swelling/inflammation in the area. A lot of different things that we do in our office is providing immediate care. If you have a lot of pain then we being to worry about tendon rupture. Sometimes the actual tendon will split. And if it gets worse, it can completely rupture. So again; getting an exam by a podiatrist, getting an x-ray to make sure there’s no bone fracture, and getting proper casting for the foot to prevent further damage is important.

There are other services in our practice that we provide and can be found in other practices such as taping the foot, preventing it from rolling and causing pressure on the Achilles tendon, and things like inserts that go into the shoe customized to the foot.”
