A bunion is caused by the uneven distribution of weight on your feet. It results in your big toe joint being pushed out of alignment, which then causes a bump on the side of the foot. Bunions are both painful and unsightly.
Some of the contributing factors related to the development of bunions include genetics (deformities at birth or inherited from family), foot injuries or trauma, and shoes that are too tight fitting (especially high heels). Arthritis is also associated with bunions, but it is unknown if it directly causes bunions or if the reason has more to do with the change in gait.
If you have a bunion on your toe, call Dr. Mitchell Wachtel at (978) 794-8406 and schedule an appointment at one of our three Massachusetts offices. We are equipped to deal with your bunion in whatever way is needed, and we are here to answer your questions.
